The Most Popular Harem Light Novels

Harem novels are typically written by female authors. They're characterized by having more than one love interest for the protagonist, often with some kind of contrived reason why all of these people fall for them (such as having an S&M fetish).

Harems first began to be published in Japan during the early 1970s. Most harem manga and novels portray a protagonist who is surrounded by three or four girls who are very interested in him for what ever reason. A few harem stories might even include more than four characters; it's not unusual for there to be ten or more potential love interests surrounding the protagonist. The usual focus is on one main character the other female supporting characters compete over relationships with him.

No matter how many pretty girls surround him, the main character is almost never someone who fans would consider a true "player." He's usually either naive or just an overall kindhearted fellow that people love dearly.

The protagonist doesn't have to be male; any protagonist can have a harem. The plot of a harem novel can go in several different directions: perhaps there is a girl who has a crush on one guy from school and wants to win his heart so she joins this club he's in. There might also be events where girls try to get close to the protagonist, such as when they're afraid something bad will happen to them otherwise they'll fall into another guy's hands. In other cases, it may be because the person simply wants their protection.
